An Invitation To Her Impenetrable Obscurity
A study understanding the censorship of the female form and gender inequality. A response to the debate that still exists on social platforms of moderating and censoring the female nipple due to the to pornographic/nude content it entails that is not safe for the community.
Instagrams policy guidelines:
Post photos and videos that are appropriate for a diverse audience.
“We know that there are times when people might want to share nude images that are artistic or creative in nature, but for a variety of reasons, we don’t allow nudity on Instagram. This includes photos, videos, and some digitally-created content that show sexual intercourse, genitals, and close-ups of fully-nude buttocks. It also includes some photos of female nipples, but photos of post-mastectomy scarring and women actively breastfeeding are allowed. Nudity in photos of paintings and sculptures is OK, too.”
Self-portraits, January, 2019
“I feel more comfortable nude nowadays. I can see what my body looks like beyond the dysmorphia that I see through my own eyes. Through the camera, I can see what is real.”
I wanted to create a triptych that shows the female form in centered clarity but with erased nipples to show the debate of censorship compared to body parts skewed by the transparent glass, because they are considered gender-neutral body parts, and therefore acceptable by society to view in a media setting.
